511 raw selvage help
hey im totally new to raw denim and have no idea what im doing. all i
do know is i want some awesome whiskers and honeycombs with pocket
fades as well. i have heard that a pre soak is required for raw denim
but ive also heard it depends on the denim. my jeans right now are not
the perfect fit they are a bit big and im contemplating a pre soak in
the tub with them on to get the perfect fit then as i wear them they
will stretch for comfort what is what i want. i have already worn them
1 week and am wondering what i should do about the pre soak(did i wait too long). so my
question is should i do a tub soak in warm water to shrink them to fit
now or should i just wait the 6 months and do the tub soak then to
maximize fades. although if i wait im afraid i wont get the good fit
later on or the denim will be really weak and most likely rip. i want
pretty good fades but i really want a good fit and am willing to wait
for the fades, what should i do? If i do wait to do a soak at all will
i still be able to get the perfect fit i want or will they stretch out
way too much by then? they are levis 511 raw selvage jeans by the way
if that matters.
If they're a bit big then definitely do a soak and do it as soon as possible. Once fading starts, a late pre-soak will mean that your fades will not be in the right place once the denim has shrunk slightly. Plus, if you don't get a good fit on them, the longer you wear them, the more they will relax, making them even bigger and a worse fit. Lie in the tub with them on for half an hour, in swimming pool temperature water. Something not too cold that you can't stand it, but not warm to minimise indigo loss. Then wear them dry, crouching and lunging (sounds silly I know) every now and then to make sure they stretch and shrink in all the right places. These couple of hours will be the most uncomfortable feeling time in you entire life... or until you buy another pair and do the process all over again. Good luck!
Thanks! im starting to get a bit of a pocket fade cause ive been wearing them a week, its only slight though. should i do the soak with that fade? no other fades are present.
A soak won't hurt your fades at all.
should i soak in warm or cold water? i want to minimize indigo loss.

Cold water minimizes indigo loss, but some might still come out and turn the water a strange colour. The soak wont damage your fades, it actually makes them come out a bit more brighter. The problem is shrinkage. If you lose an inch on your inseam, the honeycombs at the back of your knees may rise up slightly and not be bang on where your knees create the stresses. So it's always best to do the soak before you wear them to get rid of the shrink problem otherwise it can make the jeans look like a bad fit - having honeycombs on the back of your thighs instead of your knees will look a little odd. I saw a guy wearing a pair of high street "jeans" the other day, you know the ones where they are already faded and distressed, and the manufacturers had put honeycombs in. However, they were way too low and on the back of his calves. To me, it looked awful and I gagged into a bin as I passed by. But that's just me. I'm sure he thought he looked the shit!
^Agreed about the indigo loss. Don't worry about it at this point.
However, the 511s are sanforized, so shrinkage isn't as much of an issue. There's no way the jeans will shrink enough to put the combs up your thighs...Even if it was unsanforized denim the fades wouldn't shift more than an inch, tops.
So just did the soak a few hours ago and my jeans are finally dry. much better fit and i like the more wrinkled look of them now. they are a bit stiff but i think if from drying them in my bathroom with the heater on. hopefully they will loosen up...all in due time. shanks for the info everyone! is there a better way to dry jeans?
Not really. Most of us just hang 'em up. Putting them outside usually works faster, but not better.
