Singeing

What does Singeing mean?

One of the last phases in garment production in which the fabric surface hair is burnt using a controlled flame, in order to yield a clean appearance.

Heddels explains Singeing

Also known as gassing, singeing is a finishing process that burns off any loose fibers protruding from the fabric’s surface by passing the material over a gas flame.

When performed on cellulosic fibers such as cotton it creates a smoother texture, less pill, increased wettability, and better dyeing characteristics.

The extraneous fibers burn into ash, which are then easily wiped away. Most synthetic fibers are harder to singe as the loose fibers melt instead of burn and leave a hard residue on the fabric.

Raw denim jeans being singed results in a loss of hairiness.
