What does Poplin mean?

Name of a light weight, tightly woven, plain weave fabric where a coarser yarn is used in the filling than the warp, leaving a slight rib effect across the width of the goods.

Also known as tabinet, poplin is typically made from a silk warp with a worsted weft. It has a slightly ribbed texture, resists stains well, and tends not to wrinkle.

Poplin’s name comes from the term “papeline”, a silk fabric from Avignon, France named after the papal residence located there. Poplin is a very strong fabric and is used primarily for winter clothing and upholstery.
