Heddels explains Hipster Jeans

Hipster jeans, also known as low-rise jeans, came into fashion in the 1960s. Known as hip-huggers back then, they rose in popularity with the hippie culture and were later adopted by the disco movement in the 1970s.

Hipsters resurfaced in the 1996 with designer Alexander McQueen’s daringly low “bumsters” and later in the 2000s, worn by pop singers such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

They typically have a rise (the length between the waist of the pants and the crotch) of 8-20 centimeters and sit at least 8 centimeters below the belly button. Although hipsters are most often associated with women, they can in fact be worn by either gender.
