Heddels explains Genova

Jeans were first sold in the port of Genoa, or Genova, during the sixteenth century. The Genoese Navy began wearing jeans because the durable pants were able to survive the rigorous chores and duties of a sailor. The men washed their trousers by dragging them behind the ships in fishing nets, where the jeans were gradually bleached white by the sun and sea water.
