Heddels explains Five Pocket Jeans

Almost every pair of jeans manufactured today has five riveted pockets. However, the original Levi’s prototype, produced in 1873, only had three – two in the front and one in the back. In 1890, they added the watch pocket, now referred to as the coin pocket. It wasn’t until 1905 that Levi added the fifth and final back pocket to their 501XX jeans. Today, five pockets are considered the industry standard.
