PF Flyers Opening Day Collection

Baseball season in America has officially begun, and, being a company steeped in baseball history, PF Flyers came out swinging with slew of products in celebration of Opening Day. The small capsule collection is a team effort with Ebbets Field FlannelsMitchell Bat Company, and Leather Head Sporton the roster.

The entire collection takes inspiration from Popeye the Sailor, another American icon, which debuted in the same year as PF, 1937. The collection is inspired by a classic episode which pits Popeye against his arch-nemesis, Bluto, in America’s favorite pastime. To honor this legendary rivalry, two versions of each product are made, one representing Popeye and his team, Popeye’s Pirates, and another representing Bluto and his team, Bluto’s Bears, all of which follow a simple black and white color scheme.

Although hats, baseball bats, and baseballs are all present in the collection, it’s safe to say that the big hitter is the Opening Day Rambler Hi sneaker. Both versions of the sneaker are made with a full grain leather upper, flat waxed cotton laces, gunmetal eyelets, baseball stitching at the heel, and translucent soles.

It makes sense for the brand to keep with the baseball theme, but the capsule collection looks more like a collector’s set, especially with the ball and bat. And for a collection so American, it seems like a misstep that the shoes are the only piece in the entire collection that are not made in the States.

In any case, it’s an interesting collection that incorporates much of the history of the company and pairs very well with opening day. You can check it out in full here, or check our stockist list for the made in USA sneakers.
