Dawn Yanagihara began Kiriko some three years ago with the goal of keeping vintage Japanese textiles alive for the next generation. Dedicated readers may remember her from my Northern Grade coverage in 2013. Her first products were small, up-cycled accessories like pocket squares and scarves. The collection has grown and now we see Kiriko combining old Japanese fabrics with new ones in their first run of denim jeans.
Adding their own twist on the selvedge five-pocket, Kiriko’s jean incorporates a section of traditional Japanese fabric lining the inside of the cuff. Whether it’s the geometric Shibori or the floral Tsubaki, each fabric is sure to draw some additional attention.
Aside from the eye-catcher, Kiriko appears to have put together a solid jean to boot. It’s a unisex straight fit made with 13oz. Japanese selvedge denim, entirely cut and sewn in Japan, all for a retail price of $185. Even without the cuff-lining, that is a great deal on a Japanese made jean.
