Fade Friday – Lee 101 Rider (15 months, 3 washes)

The spotlight for this week’s Fade Friday in on this classic pair of Lee 101 Riders. This beautiful pair has been worn with dedication for 450 days and has only seen 3 washes. They’ve even seen a few repairs along the way. These come to us from Bram Spaniersberg, who works at a premium street wear store called Daily Rush located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The real highlight for this pair are in its thighs and honeycombs. The thighs are almost white and blend in smoothly to the still dark indigo leg. The honeycombs are sharp with diamond-sharp fades. Its very easy to visually see the love and care that went into this pair of jeans.

The 5 Dip Indigo dying process used in this pair creates the amazing blue hue of this denim. Its an ancient process that oxidizes a mixture of salt, soda ash, sodium hydroxide, and indigo in order to turn the denim from an originally green color into this deep indigo. This technique usually requires 5 dips for the best results.

I always wonder why more people don’t wear Lee 101 or Wranglers blue bells more often? I think their history in denim alone would pull more weight. Anybody know where the denim is from on these? Great FF

      I believe it is Kuroki

      • CVanDriel

I know for a fact that some, if not most, of the denim from the Lee 101 is Kuroki. A few seasons ago they released some 12 Oz. Kaihara denim 101 S and 101 Rider but I believe those have been discontinued (A pity because they faded beautifully!).

I’d love to find a pair of plain old Lee Riders but I think Lee has gone around the bend. I live in Colorado and we still see plenty of Wrangler 13MWZs and George Strait jeans but Cinch, Ariat and a few others have made major inroads. I’m still a Levi’s guy but I’d probably have one pair of Lee Riders – if I could sind them. Lee doesn’t even show them on their website.

        it’s mainly a Lee Europe division thing…

  • Jassen

The Before pictures are from a different denim. Kaihara to be excact.

    • Rham

did you mean Lee slim rider selvedge? I saw it on Lee showroom couple days ago, it is kaihara fabric 12 oz, yellow selvedge, cost about $90 more.

What I saw about Lee 101 rider color is not that deep, look like light indigo, or may be I’m wrong, dunno :/

      • Jassen

I mean what I said. Both pictures are using Lee 101 Riders, but the denim is different. I don’t know what jeans you saw at the showroom but I don’t think its Kaihara. The yellow selvage Lee uses mostly is made from recycled cotton and is not Japanese.

    • CVanDriel

Are they? Because the Kaihara’s I bought a few seasons ago have dark blue “Lazy S” stitching’s / arcuates. Maybe they re-released some Kaihara with different colour stitching’s. You are right below stating that the yellow selvedge is recycled cotton denim, my Kaihara’s have white / no colour selvedge.

Finally, Leepros! I wish there were more brands that did Lee or Wrangler repros, THAT’S a kickstarter brand I’d back!

This might be one my my favorite Fade Fridays yet. Lee really doesn’t get nearly enough attention in the raw denim community, and these just prove that they should.

  • Model Citizen

Nice. Those are dope fades, especially for 12 oz. denim. The fit looks solid too and the rise seems to be a little higher than average which is a plus in my book. These would be good summer jeans.

These are sick! I love the dirty cream color coming through

  • Person

Whenever the pockets are really far apart it reminds me of someone cross-eyed, like Steve Buscemi’s character in Mr. Deeds.

  • onekae

Either not a good fit or this guy put in many hours sitting. Crazy unattractive butt and thigh stretching. Fades are muted but a nice ashy color.

it’s called a Vintage fade. not your hypbeastSufu type..

Those look like they really need another wash

  • swissjeansfreak

Great denim eve seen on those jeans. I love the honey combs with the cracks in them at most

I’m also a fan of Lee 101rider and would have to say that Japan is just as into them as Europe or more! I just came back from a 2 week trip and noticed more people wearing Repro wranglers and Lee’s more than Levis. I asked one Japanese dude if he had a time machine because all he sold were brand new/slightly used levis from the 50′s and 60′s. The store was called banana boat in Harajuku, close to Neighborhood and supreme shop. Also Japan does make a slim fit yellow selvedge Lee Repro from the 50′s I just sold it on ebay…
