dutil. denim Fade February 2014 Re-Cap + $100 GC Giveaway

Though everyone takes to raw denim for their own reasons, one of the biggest drivers for taking the leap is the goal of obtaining high contrast, drool-worthy fades. dutil. denim‘s Fade February is a competition celebrating this very aspect of dungarees, which they hosted for the third year running last month at their Vancouver and Toronto locations. We were fortunate enough to join in on the annual, one-day event at their Vancouver outpost, as well chip in our two cents as part of the judging panel.

Fade February - Dutil Interior

dutil.‘s location on Cordova Street, Vancouver; jam-packed with stacks of denim.

Denim enthusiasts of all ages and from all walks of life took part in Fade February; tallying about 25 strong in-store for the final showdown. As opposed to other contests that restrict length of wear, denim brand/model worn, etc. dutil.‘s Fade Friday doesn’t impose any criteria on participants whatsoever. The entry instructions are dead simple: pit your faded raw denim against those from other wearers and you could walk away with a fresh, new pair of raw denim (from Rogue Territory, Baldwin Denim, or Naked & Famous).

See below for a re-cap of the winners from both stores and be sure to hop over to dutil.‘s website for more information on their store.

Love the slub + washed out look of Toronto Larry’s PBJs.

  • DenimCasey

All of them are amazing fades, but my favorite pair are Long Chan’s Eternal’s. They have a nice even wear pattern down the front and the perfect amount of fraying on the whiskers. The holes in the knees are at that perfect point, just before they’ll need to be fixed. Great job!

  • Vinyl Scratch

These are all very well worn jeans, but I have to say that Kwon’s PBJ’s are my personal favorites. The unique texture of the denim and the fades that resulted from the indigo/indigo dye are just awesome.

Really?? Thank you so much! This is an incredible surprise! I can’t wait to rock a new pair of fine denim. ^_^

  • Model Citizen

Morgan Tanner’s N&F x Momotaro are hands down the best looking fades of the bunch in my opinion, really nice contrast. The rest are either underwhelming (none of them are bad, just not amazing) or a little to close to retirement for my taste. Cool contest.

  • Derek Montanye

Big fan of Morgan Tanner’s N&F x Momotaro. They have the perfect combination of vintage fading and contrast without being too over exaggerated.

  • paddy

    Levi’s. Because they’re Levi’s.

  • Clarke

Quach’s N&Fs for sure. I love the way it’s kept some of the darker shades, even at the knee.

  • Clarke

Quach’s N&Fs for sure. I love the way it’s kept some of the darker shades, even at the knee.

  • SteveBirkner

I like the E3s the best because of the high contrast. I like how you can still see how dark the demon started off.

  • Devan Prithipaul

I like Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant2, those combs are perfect and the contrast he got is amazing considering the time he spent.

  • Neil

I really like Larry Kwok’s Pure Blue Japans. The honeycombs are amazing and the stack fades compliment the combs really well. I wish i could fade some raws like that

  • Martin Thuresson

Beatson’s APC. Very personal fades that clearly show how he wore them.

  • Aaron Sum

    I like Long Chan’s Eternal

    the fades look pretty nice
the honeycombs somehow remind me of electricity
    looks pretty darn sick

  • bookofalx

I like Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant2 cause the darks still show, I love the contrast!

  • mf051404

Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant2 is the definition of contrast, should’ve been the Vancouver winner IMO

  • Jed

I love the whiskering and fade through the thighs on Chan’s Eternal.

  • Jonathan

Tyler’s New Standards are awesome for maintaing that contrast even after so many washes.

  • Season

I love Long Chan’s fades on his pair of Eternals!

  • http://beyondidlechatter.tumblr.com jonathna

morgan tanner’s nf x momotaro are best because they look like mine. I regret not entering this contest :@@@

  • Kelvin

    Long Chan’s fades are epic!

  • philip_reaves

Larry Kwok’s Pure Blue Japan. Those stacks!!!

  • Geo

Larry Kwok’s Pure Blue Japans. With the faded to white warp and the indigo weft they almost looks like a standard pair of indigo warp/white weft turned inside out. Then you see the stacks.

  • http://twitter.com/ghaniam Ghani Abdul Malik

Dem honeycombs and stacks of Larry Kwok’s Pure Blue Japan

  • Joe Kostoff

Bryan nguyen’s fades were the best! All of the fades are awesome, but bryan had a really nice color contrast!

  • Joel Tan

Morgan Tanner really does deserve the first place. Nice vertical fading and not overly high contrast makes it a great looking pair!!

  • Taylor Scobbie

Definitely Morgan Tanner. Love the vintage fades.

  • Kurt Reusse

Morgan Tanner’s N&F x Momotaro without a doubt, denim faded to that light blue all over is my kryptonite

  • Georg Scherrer

Larry Kwok’s Pure Blue Japan! Nice colour!

  • edric

Rick’s were my favorite. Nice contrast of fades, the whiskers and thigh fades are perfect. The stacks and combs are nice and even. You can tell these are a great fit, not too tight/not too loose. I like when denimheads wear their jeans with a regular fit rather than tighter to try to get heavy honeycombs.

  • whorebucks

All of these are pretty amazing and worthy of fade friday.

  • WyoFlo

Tyler Beatson’s APC New Standard’s look the best to me! Looks like he wore the hell out of them. Beautiful coloring and great high contrasts. Love the gradually darkening color going down from the thigh to the knee area and below. Super cool.

  • a2k_ace

I like Morgan’s the best. Love the high contrasts.

  • Teddy

    Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant2 – the contrast is insane.

  • BendixDrive

Long Chan’s Eternal are really great. Love the color spectrum (deep blue to near-white), and that the knees are blown out. That’s honest wear.

  • bouge

Rick Quach’s is the best. He’s got stack fades, honeycombs, and knee fades. Nice all around, plus i prefer the dark denim with contrast fades.

  • DJBV

Morgan’s are looking real nice. I like how the stacks are looking and how the color is from a light blue to near and off white color. Those are really nice.

  • Guest

Tyler Beatson’s APC New Standards – Those jeans have been worn, and worn hard. Their an awesome visual of what jeans are meant for.

  • Tom Shanks

Tyler Beatson’s APC New Standards – Those are jeans that have been worn, and worn hard. That is what I love about denim, and those jeans are a wonderful visual representation of that.

  • Sindri

It has to be Morgan Tanners denim, the colour on them is beautiful you can tell he’s worn then hard. That’s my ideal color fade in my opinion that’s what I try to aim for.

  • Zelch

Larry Kwok has my favorite for sure. So much color loss in 2 years, especially for a double dyed denim!

  • willthebastard

The color contrast on Brandon Nyugen’s are amazing!! My favorite by far.

  • ivan

Bryan Nguyen’s N&F’s are the best for sure. I first saw his post on /r/rawdenim. The fit pics are only a tease compared to the laid-flat pics. That amount of contrast could only be matched by Samurai’s. Just look at those combs!

  • Gunnar

Those PBJs! The fit on those gave some beautiful, crisp parallel combs. I love the vibrancy as well.

  • Al

I’m stuck between Long Chan’s Eternals and Morgan Tanner’s N&F/Momotaros. They both exhibit fades that I might associate with vintage worked in denim. Both pairs also maintain more of a classic blue finish while still sporting high contrast fading. Basically, they look like cowboy jeans and I like that! I’ll give the the Eternals my final vote just because the knee holes up the cool points.

  • victor

my favorite jeans are the denim demon raave atjsaan joekse simply because it has a taper fit that i love and a rainbow selvedge line like the Edwin 55

  • Joe

    Long Chan’s Eternals

  • Damian

Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant2 gets my vote for 1st place. Outstanding contrast and the jeans still look plenty wearable. Long Chan’s Eternal’s are solid as well. Nice overall contrast with a bit more love on the knees. I’m surprised that so many people like Morgan Tanner’s N&F/Momotaros. The fit is strange. They look almost like a drop crotch sweatpant. The fades/holes make the jeans look kinda sloppy as well.

  • DDavil

surprisingly I like Rick Quach’s NF 24oz pair. They have fades, look well worn, and the denim has held up well.

  • Richard

Those Eternals get my vote. If you consider the before, its pretty amazing how far they have come along. Combs look great too!

  • TBain

I would have to say I like Bryan Nguyen’s E2′s the best. The contrast on them is crazy and they look well worn, but not overly so.

  • moooreo

    Rick Quach’s. So nice.

  • Alex L

My pick is the elephant 2s from Brian Nguyen. The fades in the back look great and the font still has the dark indigo color. Just like what i want to achieve with my elephant 2s. Nice work!

  • Yuval M

Bryan Nguyen’s N&F Elephant 2 since the fades were at very high contrast which is a beautiful look

  • Joey Denim

digging those Elephant 2′s my fav!
