Left Field NYC Fall/Winter 2013 – Raw Denim Lineup

Left Field NYC Fall/Winter 2013

New York-based Left Field NYC has been featured here plenty of times before, most notably in our recent review of their popular Chelsea fit. Helmed by founder Christian McCann, the brand and its owner are passionate about taking Japanese fashion influences and putting a distinctly American twist on them. The Fall/Winter 2013 raw denim lineup is exemplary of that motivation, and it’s sure to please both new customers and long-time fans.

Each of the three new options come in a 15 Oz. weight, but the denim differs greatly between them. The first is a selvedge from the well-known USA-based Cone Mills that features a soft hand and looser weave. The second is a selvedge from Kuroki Mills in Japan, with a tighter weave compared to the Cone Mills and a resulting rougher hand.

Finally, the third option is the “Black Maria“, featuring a selvedge from Collect Mills in Japan. Highlighted by a sulfur-dyed warp and deep black weft, the Black Maria also has a bit of a backstory as explained by the brand:

For miners at the turn of the 20th century, the Black Maria acted as both an ambulance and as a hearse. In small coal towns of Pennsylvania, the wives and children of miners knew that this black covered wagon could bring nothing good. When there was an accident in the coal mines the Black Maria would roll down the streets of the town and drop the bodies of the dead in front of their homes.

All three of the Fall/Winter 2013 raw denim lineup options are featured in Left Field NYC‘s 1950’s inspired straight leg Greaser fit and the slimmed down Chelsea fit, with a narrower overall design and lower rise. They’re available right now on the brand’s freshly redesigned online shop, so be sure to take a look at the details below and then head on over to their website.

this is whats so dope to me about LF, is that Christian is always experiment with different fabrics. a couple seasons ago I bought a pair of nishinbo left hand twills, and now, besides for the staple cone pairs, hes off on some next shit. and if you go back in the catalogue hes been banging out different shit since day once. this is what new and interesting to me with denim, now “glow in the dark” or “gentle gloss coat”, that is little kid shit.

and the back pockets always look bigger than they actually are in photos. take my word for it or go try on a pair yourself.

I’ve recently purchased a pair of Black Maria Greasers. I love them. The material is different than Japanese brands in that it feels thinner, but also crisper. The honeycomb creases had set in the first day I’d worn them, although there was no fading yet of course.

The Greaser has a high-rise waist that some of you may dislike. If you’re used to wearing your pants low or even beneath your hip line, the Greasers aren’t for you. I will say that it looks a little awkward to tuck a button up shirt into these jeans since the waist is so high. However, tucking a t-shirt into them will give you that classic 50’s look, which I think is really cool.

Overall, the quality is excellent and after about a month of wear, they are beginning to fade a nice white-ish gray along the crotch area. My one concern would be the quality of the stitching in accordance with the texture of the denim. I wear my pant legs cuffed to about 2 1/2 inches (these jeans are a 37 inch length). The stitching on the inside of my left cuff has already been worn away from abrasion. I’ll have to keep an eye on that.

I’d recommend these jeans to anyone who wants to switch it up a bit with a black pair of raws. And you can’t beat that they’re made in the USA.
