There is no doubt we all have countless pairs of indigo colored raw denim in our closets, but what many of us fans of raw, selvedge denim lack is a proper pair of black selvedge jeans. Leave it to Left Field NYC, one of the originators of the Made in USA movement, to come through with an incredibly solid pair of raw black jeans perfect for the upcoming fall and winter seasons.
Dubbed the Black Maria, this pair of jeans is named after the hearse that carried deceased workers in the small mining towns of Pennsylvania during the early 20th century. When there was an accident in the mines, the Black Maria would roll through town dropping off the bodies of the dead in front of their homes.
Morbid as it may be, these jeans are the perfect option for those looking for a little variety in their everyday denim rotation. The denim used is made in Japan and is sulfur-dyed with a black fill. The jeans will maintain their black colour for a long time, but after extensive wear will develop a natural grey fade. See the photos below to get a feel for how they will look after heavy wear.
From the denim to the hardware, these jeans are blacked-out. The rivets are Left Field branded Universal tack buttons in all black, as is the leather back patch and the fly-buttons. Everything is black except for the red bandana pocket bags, which are custom made in the USA.
These jeans are offered in their two standard fits, the Greaser and the Chelsea. The Greaser has a straight leg with a slight taper and a medium-high rise, which according to Left Field is similar to a 1950’s style dungaree. The Chelsea is the slimmed down version of Greaser and features a narrower thigh, knee and leg opening, and a slightly lower rise. As with all Left Field products, these jeans are not vanity sized and run one or two sizes smaller than most other brands, keep this in mind when purchasing.
