Fade Friday – Unbranded 21 Oz. 121 Skinny (2.5 Months, No Washes)

Fade Friday - Unbranded 21 Oz. 121 Skinny (2.5 Months, No Washes) As much as we love any beautifully beat-up pair of raw denim for our weekly Fade Friday, it’s always a treat when it comes from one of our very own readers on our forum. Courtesy of user, Grimtomato, we cast this week’s spotlight on his pair of Unbranded 21 Oz. 121 Skinny denim that he’s been wearing daily for just approximately 2.5 months (note: we say “approximately” since we’re not 100% certain of when he started wearing them).

As a participant of the Heavyweight Denim Championship 2 (HWDC2), Grimtomato has managed to develop some impressive fades and creases in a extremely short amount of time. He’s also gone the extra mile and maintained detailed notes of his denim’s evolution which, rather than us copying and pasting, we recommend you check out.

Be sure not to miss his “fade analysis“, and for all the DIY folks out there, take a close look at the leather belt and keychain accessory that’s made himself, as well as his Imgur profile to view his other projects.

Those are crazy fades pretty fast. Makes me wonder if those are gonna last all the way until the end of the competition before they washout or fall apart?

    • cyberkip

I’ve heard from a couple of reviews that Unbranded tends to develop fades fairly quickly when compared to more expensive brands. Though I suppose that’s nearly nearly all brands that specialize in selvedge/raw.

Then again, I could be talking out of my ass. Or at least the asses of the reviewers who said it.

  • BillygoatsGruff312

Great pick Nick Coe! I’ve been waiting for a FF on these jeans for a while. I have a pair I got 6 months ago and they aren’t quite as faded in the front. Honeycombs on all of the UB 21oz I’ve seen are always off the chain. However, I am disappointed with the way the top block looks on all of their 21oz cuts. I hope alot of folks comment on this FF b/c I want to know what folks thing of the UB 21s, the worlds cheapest heavyweight selvage.

  • cincinnatus

21oz for $110? I wonder if these will be in tatters by year mark. They look good. But how is there stitching missing near the selvage seam and some of the inseam already? Props if they have been worn to hell and back. But 2.5 Months? Interested to see these at a year.

dude… get real… these jeans are monster. of course for denim nazis like you, you rather pay 500$ for the jeans to say “samurai” or any shenenigans….

      • Dirty Denim

Exactly and lets not forget u can always repair which adds a personal touch. The shyte repairs iv done on some of my shyte denim looks pretty damn good

        • cincinnatus

I don’t own samurai’s or have ever paid for jeans that were $500. I’m not denim nazi… i just appreciate jeans that don’t don’t come apart in 2.5 months. I don’t wear jeans to get sick fadez… ya’ll kids have fun.

            jimmies status: rustled

      • RoctimusGrime

You sound Ignorant. YOU get real. I simply stated MY opinion. I own denim from Samurai to Gap, Japan quality to China. I break in my own and respect wash houses at the same time.
Don’t agree with what I said, cool.. No need to get your denim in a bunch…

  • RoctimusGrime

I’m calling these “Suspect”.. Here’s why..

-If this jean was worn heavily like that for 2.5 months, and wear is shown in the back pockets, knees, etc.. Then how come the Waistband Patch looks UNSCATHED?? It almost looks brand new.

-Now, I know with my jeans and break-in, Most of my patches, be it Samurai, RRL, N&F, CULT -the color changes, the waistband edge seam starts showing and edges roughen.. I see none of that here.

-Also, As for the fades in the back pockets, there seems to be no real “shifting of content” Fades. It just looks like the items are stuck in place. Plus, in his pics, the jeans don’t look that tight for the pocket items to seem “stuck”.

-On top of all that, It doesn’t matter where the denim comes from, or if he truly did wear them everyday, I haven’t seen fades like that from anyone in that short of a timespan.

    • BillygoatsGruff312

I’ve got a pair of these and I’ll vouch that the back pockets are indeed tight enough to hold contents locked in place for overnight (thats right..under 24 hour) contrast fading. If he wore outside daily, I have no doubt the poster is telling the truth re: the amount of time he’s had the jeans. That said..what do you think of the fades/fabric?

      • RoctimusGrime

That still doesn’t explain the non-wear on the leather patch. A belt running thru the Waistband would show some wear, especially if there’s wear everywhere else. The Waistband goes through a lot of wear and stretching.. even in 2 months.

In my opinion, and I clearly state “MY” opinion, these jeans were altered.. light sanded, whatever. -They don’t look like this was just simply worn for 2.5 months.

I won’t comment on fades if I think they’re fake. As for the denim, I can only comment if i could feel them. But I like the texture.

        • yada

agreeing with you…especially the combs nearly scream “sanded” although there are a lot other objects you can rub on your creases to accelerate the fading…

          • Guest

            aa

          • BillygoatsGruff312

These are two month old pics of my UB221s. At this point the honeycombs are pretty much identical to those in this week’s poster’s jeans. Seeing is believing..the ‘combs on these are real and prolly aren’t artificially enhanced.

          • RoctimusGrime

            Yeah, you right…

No, I don’t believe you… I can show you a pic of my RRL’s and tell you I did all of that in 2.5 months as well, even though it took a whole year of constant wearing.

          • BillygoatsGruff312

My above pic was at around 4 months, but I never really wore them out of the house due to fit issues. However, the combs now (at 6 months) mirror Grimtomato’s. Given that most of the vertical fading on mine came from the one week I wore them out in the sun (and wore them constantly), if Grimetomato was wearing them out and about for 2.5 months he could totally get the fades posted above imho.

    • Dirty Denim

The leather patch is not really a leather that ages. Its almost pleather in feal with a sheen to it. That said the denim on these fade exceptionally well. I can 100% back up the short amount of time it takes for these to fade. Besides that the fades on his pair dont look artificial and sanded & look pretty damn real

    • Zelch

I have several pairs of unbrandeds, all around the year or 6 month mark. They have absolutely no sign of age on the leather. You’re comparing some the cheapest raw denim on the market to some of the most expensive, which uses proper leather and the sort of dye that is intended to last. As for the “shifting” anyone who’s worn heavy and skinny jeans should know that they can secure things in place – especially once they start to mold to the shape.

Honestly though, three people on here and the *entire* unbranded forum on superdenim are not in on some giant fade conspiracy.

    • FRINGECLASS

are you from Scooby do and the gang

  • Dirty Denim

I have a pair of these and they began fading instantly. I put about a month into mine but stopped because the fit just wasnt my cup of tee after awhile. I liked the fit on the lighter skinnies for some reason. To bad UB or Naked & Famous for that matter doesnt fit my body at all. The WEIRD GUY fit seams to be the perfect name for all their cuts. Just my opinion

    • BillygoatsGruff312

Agreed. The fit doesn’t look good at all. The only time I wear them out of the house is when I’m riding my motorcycle solo or fishing. Weird guy/weird fit is the good description for them.

  • Justin

2,5 Months for 21 oz.? I’d say not possible, unless he’s working in the construction with these jeans for 2,5 months including the weekend and holidays. Look at how dark the original is.. Not 2,5 years?

  • Chris

What has created the back right pocket fade?

    • Grimtomato

I put together a bunch of wire for that. So far it hasn’t come through that well. If you check back maybe in a few months, it’ll fade through.

      • Chris

Looks good imo, meant to be a word?
Regarding the fades, I was surprised at their quality considering the short space of time but you have no reason to lie so hopefully people will trust in your integrity!

      • Adam

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, but I had a question about that black belt you had in the last updates? Did you make that?

If so, can you show me what you purchased? It looks really nice!

        • Grimtomato

          Hey,

So I made the black belt out of black latigo leather with a stainless steel buckle and two copper rivets. It’s a good 10+ oz thickness and has basically no stretch, The supplies were from the Springfield Leather Company. You’d need some hole punches, knives, and patience to make that happen.

If you have the supplies and the time, go for it, but if you’d like to buy it, I’m also down for that. I’ve got to buy some more since I’ve selling a belt to a friend, so if you want me to grab some extra supplies and make one for you, feel free to email me at grimtomato[at]gmail[com]

  • Grandier

if only most of these commenters would read the thread started by Grimtomato before they comment on this.

also, if only most of these commenters would read the article a little more closely.

    • Grimtomato

haha thanks for noticing Grandier, no one has bothered directing their skepticism to my thread yet.

      • Grandier

to be honest, i was just as skeptical about the length of wear at first, but after reading the thread and looking through your imgur, i’m starting to lean on the plausible side. you’ve been wearing a 21oz denim from march until now (last photo on imgur was on june), and i’m quite sure your fade is legit.

keep it up in the competition! if only i have the same endurance as you in wearing heavy weight denims (in skinny fit no less), it’s too hot for place i live in lol

      • BillygoatsGruff312

        Where is the thread? Link?

        • Grandier

          it’s in the article.

  • Johnson Benjamin

Those jeans look comfy now! Regardless of 2 months or 2 years.

  • trehsu

The stitching is already coming apart on the inside of the legs. That seems like poor quality to me

  • NYK

2.5 months? the dye fade so quickly!

  • swissjeansfreak

I always love to see some heavy used natural fading results worn the authentic dry way. Congrats to this results

  • Rhett Leroy

Would you consider making a watch band to sell? I was impressed with the one you made.

    • Grimtomato

Woops, I didn’t see this for a while. Yeah i suppose, I’ve gotten some more materials and had quite a bit more experience since that vege tanned watch strap was from my absolute first project. I’ve made a chromexcel watch strap more recently, but I don’t know if I have any pictures.up of it. Contact me at grimtomato[at]gmail[dot]com if you are still interested.
