Over The Rainbow x Naked & Famous 5&5 Capsule Collection

Vintage Dungaree Denim Short

Vintage Dungaree Denim Short

While they’re not something we’ve given a lot of love to in the past, shorts are one of those things many men will be bringing out of their closets come the warmer months.

At times, they’ve been used as a way to recycle old denim by creating cutoffs, but that is all set to change this Spring / Summer. Daniel Carman of the Toronto-based shop, Over The Rainbow, and Brandon Svarchead of Naked and Famous, have launched a line of selvedge roll up shorts from a selection of N&F’s Japanese fabrics.

The Capsule Collection features shorts in five different fabrics, as well as five short sleeve tops. The highlight of the shorts is definitely the vintage dungaree denim option, which is a slubby looking selvedge option most likely to please the raw denim enthusiast.

Past this short, there is a brown selvedge duck canvas option, a leaf/cloud double sided camo fabric used in the S/S13 denim line, a greenish brown selvedge fabric, and a lighter denim/chambray short. Plenty of options to choose from if you want to keep your love for selvedge going on your shorts.

The entirety of the collection will be released today, Thursday April 11, 2013, at Over the Rainbow‘s in Toronto and in-store only. If you happen to be located in the Toronto area, this is a great chance to pick up some of the shorts first. Don’t forget to have a beer or two with Brandon Svarc in-person and ask him exactly how he comes up with many of the denims and styles he creates.

I don’t live in toronto which is too bad, but i was wondering, does anyone know which (prestigious) mill naked and famous gets their denim from? the dungaree shorts look excellent for spring/summer as do the chambray ones. the rest im not so sure, that “Camo” is not very nice in my opinion and im not a big fan of the red (selvedge?) line above the pocket of the duck canvas denim, the red seems to clash in my eyes. oh to all my fans (jokes) on rawr i thought, naked and famous x yohji yamamoto? or even evisu x kansai yamamoto?

as far as i know, n&f sources their denim from several japanese mills but doesn’t say which ones exactly.

hmm i wonder why? thanks though.

        • chedder bob

Its probably cuz naked and famous has such a wide variety of different types of denim, which means they must get their denim from different mills.

  • Derek

i’d wear the shit out of those camos.

  • Chaz

Any idea if they’re going to be releasing these online anywhere?

  • bocah

yeah i agree, this really is crap.

      • bocah

i think brandon need to make a new brand and name it “Crap & Infamous by Brandon Svarc”.

      • Grandier

idk, i thought the vintage dungaree one is actually pretty nice. you don’t get to see a lot of raw denim shorts a lot, y’know?

the rest do kinda fall in the ordinary category though, kinda like those chinos shorts and stuff.

        • http://www.facebook.com/devan.prithipaul Devan Prithipaul

Yes, i did say below that liked the dungaree one’s. wait… raw denim shorts, so no honey combs or knee fades. what’s the point lol. just to get whiskers? the fact that they’re raw denim might hurt more than help for these shorts.

          • Grandier

well a fade is still a fade, whiskers or honeycomb. obviously as its just a short then you can only get the whiskers. whats so bad about having a short made out of raw denim anyway? some one-man brands are making iphone/ipad case out of raw denim, so why not shorts?

          • growe13

Also, YOU CAN wash raw denim. Some of us like the faded out look (with contrast still). Some of the best fades I’ve seen have boasted as much as 8 washes, it’s really all in the indigo retention (read as: cold wash, as to remove excess starch and smell, not necessarily hot soak).

            I agree with Grandier.

          • growe13

Dude, wiskers deserve more love than you’re giving them. And what are you trying to say?

          • http://www.facebook.com/devan.prithipaul Devan Prithipaul

some cons of raw denim are: its expensive, it’s difficult to care for (can’t wash), its uncomfortable. the pros of raw denim, in this scenario are getting whiskers and pocket fade. just not worth it for me.

Shorts can be nice during hot summer season

  • Slybone

G’day (thats howdy in Australian). I got a pair of denim shorts from my local thrift shop in Western Australia for $1. I had never heard of the brand which is Jacob Cohen. When I looked them up they sold for over $200 ! They are very nice if not a trifle over the top having silver coated rivets and buttons and a kind of green leather, hairy patch. Japanese denim and quite a lot of details on the inside telling you how great they are. They’re actually very comfortable and very soft. Funny that I had never heard of them because I’m a hopeless denim addict. Has anybody heard or reviewed them ? I love this site by the way thanks a million. Slyme.
