Blue Jeans Exhibition – Centraal Museum, Utrecht, the Netherlands

Aptly titled, “Blue Jeans, 350 Years of Denim“, the Centraal Museum Utrecht in The Netherlands is presenting the first large scale exhibition of the most popular and iconic garment in modern history. Here the blue jeans are analyzed in every which way and from the first traces on 17th century paintings to modern day street wear and fashion.

Though “jeans” typically reminds most of cultural figures and ideas such as cowboys, gold miners, working uniforms and rock & roll, the Blue Jeans Exhibition shows us the term has developed to become an even more relevant concept today. Through Jurgen Bey’s window installation granted by Levi’s REDthe Dutch design label Droog, and designs by Jean Paul GautierMaison Martin Margiela, and Momotaro, it’s clear that denim has come a long way since it’s inception in the 1800′s.

Additionally, much focus is placed on the innovative and environmental importance of denim. For instance, alternative production techniques like zero water waste and ozone treatments are displayed, as well the “keyboard and mouse” denim.

However, one of the most essential showings is the Blue Jeans Workshop atelier at the end of the exhibition. Giving the visitor an idea of how handcraft jeans are manufactured, it also features the one man studio, Atelier Tossijn, who for the duration of the exhibition has moved his workshop to the museum.
