Three long years ago, Sam Wilder bought a pair of Cheap Monday Autobahn Unwash jeans at Need Supply Co. in Richmond, VA. As he tells it, they were a little too tight and felt more like 150 grit sandpaper than cotton. Despite that, he loved their midnight blue indigo color and the shifty grin of the skull on the logo patch. They were his first pair of raw jeans, and he was totally unprepared for the the infatuation they would lead to.
The Autobahn’s first wash came after just 3 months, and Sam has washed them every three months or so until he purchased a new pair of jeans. The Autobahns are pretty faded top-to-bottom, and while some honeycombing is still recognizable on the back of the knees, it’s not as stark or defined as a pair of raw jeans washed for the first and only time.
These days, the Cheap Mondays have been retired to the bottom of Sam’s denim stack, but over the past 36 months he has worn his Cheap Mondays through a move from North Carolina to Washington DC, two break-ups and countless afternoons on roof decks, front porches or patios with good company. These jeans are truly a testament to the way a good pair of raws can become a second skin.
