J.Crew – Bringing Raw Denim To The Masses

JCrew Raw Denim

J.Crew is a major purveyor of men's raw denim.

If you’ve kept up with men’s fashion in the last few years, you’ve no doubt heard of J.Crew. In 2010, their head designer Frank Muytjens was chosen as one of GQ’s Best New Designers, and their product collaborations seem to be endlessly popular.

It appears that after last year’s collaboration with Japanese denim brand Warehouse they’ve gradually been making more headway into the raw denim business, and they’re using Japanese denim to do it.

Not content with sticking to just their popular 484 denim line, they now offer selvedge denim and chambray shirts, a limited stock of LVC products, as well as a number of selvedge/raw accessories.

Like it or not, J.Crew is one of the leading forces making raw denim a must-have for the trendy and fashion conscious, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

those 484s look pretty sick actually,
anyone know how much they’re running for?

    • Dixon1148

      they are 200+

been wearing a pair for about a month now and they are breaking in nicely

      • Kareem

How much did they stretch out?

        • Dixon1148

about an inch on the waist, and overall they seem to have a much more relaxed fit from when i first got them. They were almost too slim to begin with

But jcrew so often has a “take 20%” off sales as well as take “25% off ” I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price fir jcrew. All you have to do is check the website once a week and a sale should pop up within 2 weeks.

I wasn’t expecting much, but I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Wallace & Barnes jeans.  They’re possibly over-priced at $250, but they felt fantastic in the store.  The denim reminded me a lot of Warehouse denim.  It had a nice weight and a softer hand to it.  I wonder if they used their Warehouse collaboration to build their own denim contacts in Japan.  Not sure I’d cop ‘em, but I must admit they’re pretty nice

All I can think of is the Gaps attempt of entering this market, those were absolutely horrendous. I saw before and after pictures and no matter then the longevity before the first wash or the amount of wear or whatever, they all looked like mass produced, machine faded jeans…aka, like shit. Not to knock J Crew, but for that price tag there are sooooo many safer/better options considering the amount of time spent breaking in jeans. Ande Whall, RRL (flawless), Japan Blue, Somet (a little more, but if you got it, SPEND IT!), Left Field, Dior MIJ (not MII, they blow out in a minute), even APC although they do tend to wear down far quicker than the others. Point being, if you are going to spend the money and take the time, buy something proven.

Yeah but the thing is most people that just want a pair of raw selvage denim, who aren’t boneheaded denim heads, aren’t gonna know some of the more obscure brands. The first place they’re gonna look is some place like J.Crew. So they’re charging it because people will buy it

I am interested in indigo/indigo jeans for my next pair, so I will have to check then out! Any idea on the weight?

Not 100% certain, but they’re probably around 14oz.
