Fade Friday - Diesel Turbo Denim (6 Months, 4 Washes, 1 Soak)

Despite their ubiquity and global success, one particular brand that we haven’t spoken much about is Diesel. In terms of raw denim jeans, they simply just do not offer the value and purity as others in the industry. Among other reasons as well, there have been allegations of their unethical practices.

However, when it comes to this time of week, almost no one is excluded. Thus, by way of Kenny Thompson from Wyoming, USA, this week’s Fade Friday brings us the Diesel Turbo Denim.

As a bit of background, Diesel released the Turbo Denim a little over two years ago as a raw denim that undergoes a special indigo dyeing & weaving process. As a result, the time required for substantial fading is expedited from 6-12 months to 1 month.

Kenny sent us his pair after six months of wear, four washes, and one soak. He did everything in them – from metal concerts to some auto-mechanical work to bow hunting. His honest opinion was that they did not fade faster than his other denim, albeit that may be due to soaking prior to his first wear.

There is some color-balance differences in the photos below, but you still get the idea. Thanks again, Kenny, for sharing with us!

Those did age nicely, the gimmick of “these age faster” is odd especially considering the denim is sanforized.  Why not just wear unsanforized denim jeans?
9 times out of 10 unsanforized denim ages far quicker than sanforized denim.
(i still have a soft spot for Diesel, i got light-headed and flush when i finally met the Renzo the founder last year in LA)

Kiya – I really think they just lost a ton of indigo everywhere during
the washing process as opposed to creating a wear-patterned fade faster.
I didn’t really know anything about denim when I purchased these jeans
(and still learning), so these were bought solely on fit. I am working
on a pair of BiG N-02s right now, so I can compare the
      sanforized/unsanforized fading properties.

      • Hey

I know this is 10 months later, but I’ve been wearing my pair of turbos for the past year no (still no wash) and they’re definitely selvage. So while I can’t speak for these specific krooley’s, not all of the (now discontinued I believe) Turbo line is non-selvage.

the Krooley 008QM are selvage. they´re also Turbo denims :)

Are you sure about this? I just went to the Diesel store to see these in person and none of them were selvedge, including the model you listed.

the koolters 8y9 are selvedge and i’m positively sure about that!!!

i don’t want to be rude or something, but I work at jeans shop selling koolter 8y9 without selvage? but maybe they’ve changed it since we got it but it seems odd if they didn’t change the name?

you can see that there is a white selvage och the krooley 008QM here : http://www.love2shop.se/klader/classic-diesel-krooley-008qm-50857/  maybe it’s just available in sweden?

The soak stopped the “Turbo”-process. the thing with the turbo denim is that you should wear them without washing until you get the fading you like, then you wash them to stop the “turbo”-fading and they will instead fade as any other denim .  / Viktor

Im on my 7th day of turbo denim. Please tell me these jeans will shrink once i get the fade Im after? Hoping to soak in Hot water and Dry them. Any Help is appreciated ???

    • http://www.rawrdenim.com Rawr Denim

As these are sanforized denim, you shouldn’t expect a great amount of shrinkage – possibly in the range of 3% – 5% max

Im curious , what are some of the unethical practices Diesel has committed ? i worked for them for four years, and of course never heard anything.
